Electric vehicles often cost more to buy than their gasoline-powered counterparts
But in the long-run EVs are known for being less expensive to operate thanks to affordable home charging. (No gas station lines or charges is a key bonus!)
Another reason we love them: EVs also save you money thanks to much lower maintenance costs.
Did you know that driving an electric vehicle cuts out more than 12 mechanical components that require replacement or service in conventional cars? That's right! No more tune ups, oil changes, flushing of the coolant. No more replacing the air filter, transmission service, and replacing the air filter, spark plugs and drive belts.
All told, electric vehicles with battery powered engines require an estimated third of the cost on service as conventional gas-powered cars.
That's right: Electric cars offer comparatively little maintenance to the typical gasoline powered vehicle.
That's because there are simply fewer moving parts as well as a lower number of required fluids and extended brake wear intervals due to regenerative braking.
So what service is still required when you purchase an electric vehicle? Here are some of the essentials:
To keep the vehicles warranty in effect, EV makers say you should follow a series of periodic checks and services. Otherwise, your car may not be covered by the warranty if it requires additional repairs.
These items include replacing the cabin air filter and wiper blades, tire rotation, keeping the level high on the washer fluid.
All it takes is a quick mechanical inspection and some quick attention.
Here's an example of what is typically required for Electric Vehicle Maintenance:
- Check the tire pressure and adjust as necessary.
- Examine the tires for excess wear.
- Check the windshield washer fluid and fill as necessary.
The following EV maintenance is recommended for every 7,500 miles:
-Have the tires rotated.
-Check the coolant level for the battery, cabin heater, and the power inverter, accessory power, and charger modules.
-Have your mechanic check for fluid leaks. Inspect the brakes.
-Have your mechanic visually inspect the steering, suspension, and chassis components for damage.
-Inspect the power steering, halfshafts and drive shafts for excessive wear, leaks, or damage.
-Check the airbags system.
-Lubricate body components such as door locks.
-Check the accelerator pedal for damage, high effort, or binding and replace if necessary. -Have your mechanic inspect the suspension for signs of cracks, wear and other damage.
-Have your mechanic check the tire sealant expiration date.
And then, of course, there’s an EV’s battery pack.
The battery is the most expensive component in your EV.
Keep in mind that all electric vehicle batteries will degrade over the years and lose some their ability to hold a full charge. This doesn't happen over night but is gradual.
The good news: only a few electric cars manufactured to date have reportedly degraded to the point where they needed to be replaced altogether.
Still, if you own an EV long enough - 10 or 20 years - you’ll see its range decline. You may even need to swap out the battery pack or trade the vehicle in for a new one.
